Learn the techniques I like to use to create fantasy landscape tree quilts full of color and depth. In this class we will be focusing on various multi media techniques which you may use on your landscape quilts. This is landscape quilting which suggests a scene but we are not necessarily going for realism. You may wish to focus on only some of the techniques I offer or you may wish to learn them all. There will be a PDF supply list.

What is included in this class?

Choosing dynamic background fabrics to create compelling tree quilts. Your PDF supply list will direct you to sources.

How to use various apps and software to manipulate images to prepare them for loading and cutting on your Cricut machine.

Painting Evolon (nonwoven product) adding fusing to the back and cutting your own designs on the Cricut machine.

How to use various painting techniques on your quilts.

Using your own stencils created on the Cricut machine to paint foliage on your landscape quilts.

Using markers for shading and creating shadows on your landscape quilts.

How to identify your light source.

How to do thread painting for shading with various colors of thread.

Laureen Smith - Half Day Zoom class - Working with Panels - 8/18/2026
1/2 day zoom class 9am - 12pm

Working with preprinted panels

  • Shimmering Evening Splendor
  •
  • The student will download the pattern and use that for class
  • The supply list is the back of the pattern.
  • Creative ways to use panels in quilts
  • Properly cutting panels to size
  • Typical panel sizes (more than one)
  • Use of coping strips to adjust panel sizes
  • Modifying a pattern for your panel
  • Pattern is required for this class.
  • And here is the link to the pattern so that it makes it easy for participants.  https://tourmalinethymequilts.com/product/shimmering-evening-splendor/
  •  USE - SPLENDOR to get a 10% Coupon Code
  • From the teacher -
  • The panel on the cover is older, so may not be available. You can use any panel they would like. Ideally, it should be an outdoor scene. The pattern is written for a 36" panel, but it can be adjusted for a smaller one and I will show them how.

You will need six different fabrics for the frame - one dark (1 yd), three medium (1/2 yd each) and two light (1/2 yd each). The lights and mediums should coordinate with the panel. We will help them pick the best ones to use for the frame. If they are unsure (and I know some may be), they can bring extra. But I don't want them to over buy - they can pull from stash!

We are going to help them pick the best role for each fabric and adjust the fabric for their panels.
